"The Price He Has to Pay" on the charts at N1M

One of the most interesting things that has happened since the new CD “County Line” was released is the response we have received at NumberOneMusic.

Our first CD “Moonshine” was submitted to N1M around a year ago and different songs have risen to #1 on the NV Country chart and then been knocked down by another Silverwing original.  It’s been interesting to watch.

So, of course, when the new CD was released in December, Mel went straight to N1M and uploaded the entire CD and each individual song.  The next week, he asked me to guess which of our new songs had jumped immediately to #1 on the NV Country chart at N1M.  I guessed everything, but mine.

The two songs that I wrote are “The Price He Has to Pay” and “Rich and Famous.”  I brought those to Mel as lyrics with no music, just a few verses, a chorus and a bridge and without changing a word, he created the music for them.  I can be a little unsure of myself, so when he asked me what song had hit the #1 spot so quickly, I never guessed that it would be one of mine.

But to my amazement and joy, the very first week that “County Line” was on the N1M charts ”The Price He Has to Pay” jumped from nowhere to Number 1 and it has been bouncing around #1 for about 6 weeks now.  That’s when I realized the song has a connection and it describes a familiar experience for many of us.

Musically it is not your typical country song.  It’s not 3 chords and the truth.  The chord pattern is much more complicated than that.  It’s moody, as it should be considering the topic.  The music is appropriate and fits the lyrics very well.   I hope someone will sit down and attempt to break it down. Let me know how long it takes to dissect what Mel has created.  It’s unique.

The topic is a breakup, with a side of self-esteem.  It describes that moment, which you already knew was coming, when someone tells you that you aren’t enough for them and they need to move on.   Have any of us experienced that?

It’s about hearing the rejection, listening to the criticism, and still remembering that you have worth. Life goes on.  We pick ourselves up, put on our boots and start walking.

But, it’s also about the person who points the finger, whether it’s a romantic partner, a family member, a boss or anyone else who dishes some blame and rejection.  Maybe they will repeat this scene somewhere else? Perhaps, their unhappiness is not about you? What do they say… when you’re pointing a finger, three are pointing back at you?  So, I’m just offering up a suggestion.  Perhaps, it’s time to look inside.  Check it out.  Change yourself and change your world.

So, thank you to everyone who liked my song “The Price He Has to Pay” at N1M.
